Love is an emotion and an idea that rests at the pinnacle of humanity. Love encapsulates much that is good about human nature and global society. At its best, the Internet does the same, which has led to several proposals for a new generic top-level domain (new gTLD), .LOVE.
An early proponent of the .LOVE domain advocated that it be reserved for nonprofit and philanthropic use, and that all proceeds from the sale of .LOVE domains be returned to charitable use. Who Are the Applicants for .LOVE?
Dedicated domain developers with .LOVE proposals before ICANN include Canadian law firm Merchant Law Group LLP, Sierra Registry Limited (as part of Famous Four Media), Top Level Domain Holdings Limited with its affiliate Minds+Machines, Donuts.co (through subsidiary Hidden Cypress), and Cayman Islands-based Uniregistry Corporation. These five applications are developed with the intention of opening .LOVE to the largest possible audience.
The largest company applying to run .LOVE is Google, through its Charleston Road Registry subsidiary. C|Net has reported that Google plans a three-tier strategy for its 101 domain applications. Domains like .LOVE will be available to all comers, while some, like .CAR, will be available with some restrictions, and others, like .GOOGLE, will be restricted only to Google itself.
Finally, luxury goods holding company Richemont has an application for .LOVE, driven by their ownership of Cartier and its distinctive Love bracelet. Unlike other applicants, Richemont plans to restrict registrations to their subsidiaries and licensees, which also include Montblanc, Piaget, and online fashion retailer NET-A-PORTER.COM.
